Profile & Natural History

Before Queen Victoria began breeding the small ones, Pomeranians were 30-pound sled and herding dogs. Modern Poms carry the ancestor's confidence in a three-to-seven-pound package — and they have absolutely noticed they are adorable.

Temperament. Vivid, clever, and self-important, Poms learn tricks fast and train their humans faster. They are alert barkers by design — excellent watchdogs, chronic noise complaints if the habit isn't gently managed early. With their people they are genuinely affectionate and funny; with strangers, initially theatrical but quick to warm.

Care. The famous double coat needs brushing two to three times weekly (daily in coat-blowing season) but rarely smells "doggy." Exercise needs are modest: short walks and indoor games. Health watchlist: luxating patellas, collapsing trachea, dental disease, and alopecia X in some lines. Keep harness-based walking and stay on top of tiny mouths.

Fits: apartments, attentive singles and seniors, trick-training enthusiasts. Thinks twice: noise-sensitive living situations and families with very small children — they're fragile and they know it.
