Every Boston Terrier descends from "Judge," a part-bulldog part-terrier bought in Boston around 1870. Fighting days were bred out quickly; what remained was a compact, tuxedo-marked charmer that Massachusetts made its state dog.
Temperament. Sunny, people-oriented, and surprisingly athletic, Bostons are easy socializers — they generally adore strangers, kids, and other dogs. They're clever enough to learn quickly and stubborn enough to make training funny rather than solemn. Their play style is exuberant and occasionally goofy.
Care. The short coat is a weekly-brush affair; nails and teeth are the real routines. Exercise needs are moderate — brisk walks and fetch games — but heat and hard exertion need managing because of the flat face: brachycephalic airway syndrome is common, as are corneal injuries (those prominent eyes) and patellar luxation. Keep them lean; extra weight compounds breathing issues.
Fits: apartments, families, first-time owners, city life. Thinks twice: hot-humid climates without air conditioning, or homes wanting a long-distance running partner.
