The Australian Shepherd is American: Basque shepherds brought European herding dogs west, and California ranchers refined them into the versatile stock dog rodeos and dude ranches made famous. The "Australian" tag stuck from the sheep's shipping route, not the dog's passport.
Temperament. Aussies combine Border-Collie-class brains with a more extroverted, clownish temperament. They're velcro dogs — loyal, sensitive to your mood, and watchful with strangers (early socialization prevents that watchfulness becoming wariness). Herding instinct runs deep: heels of joggers and bikes are targets without training. Like all herders, they need a job with progression: agility, disc, herding, scent work.
Care. The medium double coat sheds seasonally and needs weekly brushing. Exercise needs are enormous by pet standards — daily hard activity plus mental work. Health watchlist: cataracts and eye anomalies (check breeder eye certifications), epilepsy, and the MDR1 drug-sensitivity gene common in the breed — your vet should test before certain medications. Tails are frequently natural bobbed or docked per working tradition.
Fits: ranches, sport homes, trail runners, trainers. Thinks twice: first-time owners and calm households.
